Inventory of Church Bells

of the Diocese of Peterborough

In 1989 this Guild published an inventory that updated previous publications by Thomas North (1878, 1880) and the Revd Everard S Powell (1938). The revised information was produced by James Mossop and Denis Pearson during their respective tenures as Steward of the Guild and collected by various members of the Restoration and Maintenance Committee of the Guild.

We have decided to make a further and continuing update of the information. Since 1989, the internet has been developed such that there is now the invaluable on-line version of Dove’s Guide for Church Bell Ringers.  This already records a great deal of the information, but only for rings of three or more bells, contained in our 1989 inventory and is up-dated daily from many sources. We have decided to provide a hyperlink from each tower name to the relevant entry in Dove and to record here only additional information for those towers and for towers and turrets with fewer or unringable bells.

We use the same entry format and indications used in the 1989 publication.

The heading for each tower comprises:

VILLAGE, TOWN or CITY;      Dedication;       Deanery;      Ordnance Survey map reference.

After the bell number, letters indicate:

1        A bell hung for full circle ringing

1c      A bell hung for swing chiming

1d      A bell hung dead for clocking

    1u      A bell not hung

    S        Sanctus and priest’s bells

The founder of each bell is given with the date of founding followed by its diameter in inches and weight, where bells have been recast the name of the most recent founder is preceded by 'rec' with the previous founder or founders in brackets following. Where a particular founder cannot be confirmed the one thought most likely is preceded by 'asc' - ascribed to.

Where specific dates are not known these are indicated for example by either 17C seventeenth century or c1700 around 1700.

Weights indicated in hundredweights, quarters, and pounds e.g. 11.2.21 are accurate foundry weights. Approximate weights are shown in hundredweights e.g. 10¾. The note of the tenor bell is also given.

We have additionally set ourselves the task of transcribing all the inscriptions cast on the bells and will add the information as it becomes available.

Brief notes are included on the installations including the composition of the frame, whether high side (h/s) or low side (l/s), the name of the manufacturer/installer, and the date of installation. Subsequent modifications, additions or re-hanging are also noted.

No indication as to the condition of installations is given except to indicate where bells are cracked. The intention of this inventory is merely to catalogue the existence of bells and inclusion in it does not infer that any of them are 'ringable' within the accepted meaning of the term.

The following abbreviations are also used:-

    G & J            Gillett & Johnston

    HMA         Hayward Mills Associates

    M & S           Mears & Stainbank
